Lasting fun: New novelties for kids

Flap books

Review by Alice Cary

These are always big hits. Here are two that caught my eye. The first isn't ultra-fancy, but it's a clever way to teach a sometimes difficult concept: Which Way, Ben Bunny? A Lift-the-Flap Book About Left and Right by Mavis Smith (Scholastic, $7.95, ages 3-6, 0590622455). A rabbit has swiped Ben's carrot, so he's on the trail, finding his way through a maze of left and right flaps, waiting for the reader to guide the way. There's also a surprise ending.

Preschoolers will have fun playing a guessing game with Legs: A Who's-Under-the-Flap Book by Mike Artell (Little Simon, $10.95, 0689806213). Find a giraffe, polar bear, crab, and other animals, using generous hints provided by humorous illustrations, designed to keep frustration low.

Alice Cary loves to read and play at her home in Groton, Massachusetts.
