We are big fans of Thom Jones, especially when we're feeling kind of nuts. His follow-up to The Pugilist at Rest was another collection of stories, Cold Snap. As our able reviewer Ellen Kanner wrote in her review last year: "No one in Cold Snap is feeling very well. They're manic, they're in a narcotic haze, they're doing time or they ought to be, they've got malaria, they're having heart attacks. There's even a baboon on a bender. But damn, these characters are fiery, funny and impassioned, much like their author, Thom Jones. Maybe, he suggests in this short story collection, crazy and sick isn't an inappropriate response as we inch our way toward the apocalypse."
He is at work on a novel, sayeth his Little, Brown publicist Becky Michaels. Publication date and title to come.
Snags have been smoothed -- An Exhibit Denied was published in October by Springer-Verlag.
His editor at Alfred A. Knopf tells us that McCarthy's next book will be "probably fall '97!" In the meantime, you might want to check out McCarthy's screenplay, The Gardener's Son published in September by The Ecco Press.
