The Kalendru are the enemy as our story opens with an invasion lead by Major Arthur Ferrell and his strike force as they fight to seize an enemy location. Then comes the order for the emergency pull out due to arriving reinforcements by the Kalendru and the inability of the strike force to disengage. Coupled with their slaughter of the non-combatant women and children of the Kalendru as well as non-combatant maintenance workers, it's difficult to perceive with whom the author intends your sympathy to rest.
Nothing ever changes in a war story, even in a future war. The author demonizes the enemy by labeling them as Spooks; the author writes in military jargon of the future such as stingers, plasma cannons, anti-emitter missiles, penetration grenades; and the leader of the "good guys," John Smith, assisted by Ms. Chun, both opens and closes this novel with his plea for understanding as he grieves for his troops.
