Review by Michael Williams

Folktales from around the world have long been a favorite of storytellers and story writers alike. These stories can introduce us to another culture at the same time they are teaching and delighting us.

The Golden Hoard: Myths and Legends of the World by Geraldine McCaughrean, illustrated by Bee Willey includes stories from Greece, Rome, Mesopotamia, Germany, Mexico, and many other cultures both ancient and modern.

The stories are retold with wit and charm, and the illustrations have a whimsy that will please both children and adults. Some of the stories are familiar, the retelling of the King Midas and Robin Hood legends for example. Others will be new to many readers such as the tale explaining why snakes rather than humans shed their skins.

These stories can be enjoyed by elementary-age children and up. You will also find a brief note on the background of each story in the back of the book.

Michael Williams is a storyteller, author, and United Methodist pastor in Nashville, Tennessee.
