Review by Michael Williams

Another volume that limits its scope to one continent is Joseph Bruchac's Between Earth and Sky: Legends of Native American Sacred Places, illustrated by Thomas Locker.

Drawing from the many strands that make up the blanket we call Native American, Bruchac sets these tales within the context of a conversation between Little Turtle and his uncle, Old Bear. Then each story is told in the form of a poem. Those who know Bruchac as a writer and storyteller may be surprised to learn that he is also a very accomplished poet.

The book includes a guide to the pronunciation of names, as well as a map showing the home regions of tribes that populated North America.

Michael Williams is a storyteller, author, and United Methodist pastor in Nashville, Tennessee.
