Review by Larry Woods

In the Hall of Fame for stories about magic and magical characters, Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser will be the guardians of the portal. Leiber's tales of swords and wizardry with his giant from the frozen north named Fafhrd and the diminutive thief the Gray Mouser make an unlikely pair, but all the more memorable for that.

In the latest volume, Lean Times in Lankhmar, Volume 2, our two not entirely admirable heroes are like all of us. They want refreshment, entertainment, wealth, and comfort. They achieve very little of it, but they have fun and great adventure. They differ from us in that they often risk their lives trying -- and therein lies the tale. There's no moralizing about good and evil here, just a city mouse/country mouse pair of rogues in Lankhmar, a place of depravity, magic, and power where Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser will eventually triumph and move on to at least eight or nine other books of adventure.

Larry D. Woods, an attorney, is an avid collector of science fiction.
