Running free: Stories of girls and horses

Review by Polly Murphy

Publishers have long recognized the love of young girls for those large, solid-footed mammals that were our principal means of transport for so long. Every few years we have a new batch of "horse books," and here are some recent ones that caught our eye.

For the youngest riders or would-be riders the All Aboard Reading series includes R. A. Herman's Pal the Pony. The book consists of a simple storyline with words repeated for recognition and word picture associations to help beginning readers. Warm and full of eye appeal, the full-color illustrations should elicit smiles from young readers. The message of both art and text is one we all need to remember -- continue to participate until one day each of us becomes a star!

Polly Murphy is a stable manager and riding instructor for a private school in Nashville, Tennessee.
