Review by Barbara Franklin

Amish Cooking for Kids by Phyllis Pellman Good, Kate Good, and Rebecca Good illustrates one specific culture through its food. The author and her two daughters adapt traditional Amish recipes for today's kids in the modern kitchen (and for their busy parents). In the book's introduction, Good describes briefly Amish life, and in each chapter's introduction she tells about the customs and importance of each meal. The recipes are not for the health-food crowd; these traditional farm foods use eggs, sugar, and butter. The difficulty of the recipes varies, so the book will work well with a wide age range (6-12 year olds suggested). The list of safety instructions is a good one for any time a child (or adult) uses the kitchen, and the spiral binding and heavy paper make it sturdy enough for the kitchen. Watercolor illustrations show smiling pink-cheeked people enjoying life.

Barbara Franklin is a children's specialist librarian and a good cook from Nashville, Tennessee.
