The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman is a fantasy adventure that will enthrall one and all (I was, and I didn't even have a child to listen with). There's Lyra, the gutsy young heroine and her familiar-like daemon (everyone has one, and you'll want too), battling bears in armor, witches clans, stolen children, evil scientists, Tarters, Samoyeds, "Gyptians" and a great mystery that involves "dust" and parallel worlds. Natasha Richardson gives a virtuoso performance with accents, known and unknown, galore.
