The legal thriller genre is alive and well and has a welcome new practitioner to add to its growing ranks of attorney/authors. The Deal by Sabin Willett, a young partner in a prestigious Boston law firm, features -- you guessed it -- a young partner in a prestigious Boston law firm. But that's where the similarity stops and the taut, suspenseful story begins. John Shepard, brilliant, foul mouthed, arrogant, passed over for partner, closes an amazing $840 million deal and quits. Only days later a missing zero on the mortgage document comes to light -- and the firm may be liable for the missing millions. A senior partner is found dead, a phony suicide, and Shepard is the odds-on fall guy. Ed Mulcahy, his close friend who made partner when he didn't, takes his case, and then the courtroom fireworks and fun begin. D.W. Moffett reads and does a bang-up job with the regional accents from Boston Brahmin to Colorado cowboy.
