Imagine Maurice Sendak's creatures from Where the Wild Things Are playing sports, and you'll have some idea of Jose Perez's take on the Olympic Games. In Perez on Sports, Perez's beautifully illustrated color drawings simultaneously romanticize and spoof athletic competition, as animals compete alongside humans. For instance, a hippopotamus and a polar bear twirl on ice skates, and a lion and tiger (each with a human teammate) play tennis (oh my). An entertaining -- and not-so-serious -- perspective on sports, and our obsession with them.
Shelton Clark was beaten by Uta Pippig in 1993 New York marathon. He is a freelance writer in Nashville.
