Just when you thought there was nothing left to innovate, Charles Reasoner introduces two new Sliding Surprise books, Who Pretends? and Who Drives This?. The distinctive feature of a Sliding Surprise book is a virtual "Open Sesame" for the young child: When the question posed in Who Pretends? is "Who bravely defends the castle gates?" the child, lightly yet firmly grips the opposite page and pulls to reveal an armored teddy bear with a jousting lance disguised as a maypole (I'm not making this up) with the legend "I do! En garde! I'm a knight!"
Once you've shown a child how the board book works, be prepared for countless drills through various cuddly animals in costume ranging from a hippo in a tutu-thank you, Walt Disney-to a parrot pirate singing "Yo-ho-ho." Even very young children, the kind who depend on board books for their daily fiber content, can enjoy this book while three-year-olds like the opportunity for blatant manipulation.
Who Drives This? follows the same format but sets a different tone with the first combination: In answer to "Who drives about in an ambulance?" a mouse in surgical garb glibly replies, "I do! I'm a paramedic!" You'll be surprised how quickly three-year-olds will add that word to their active vocabulary.
