Elizabeth George's excellent new addition to her Inspector Thomas Lynley series considers the consequences of parental deception as the sins, real and imagined, of the parents are visited upon the children. In the Presence of the Enemy features a Thatcheresque Junior Minister awash in her own ambition, a London tabloid editor who is used to exploiting scandal, rather than being exploited by it, a relentless, sleaze--slinging reporter, and the welcome regulars-D.I. Lynley, Sgt. Havers, and Lady Helen. Derek Jacobi's performance is, as always, flawless, the voices right on target.
