Review by Michael Pellecchia

The Stuff Americans Are Made Of by Josh Hammond and James Morrison. These authors, one a consultant, and the other a professional writer, follow in the tradition of Vance Packard in writing about why Americans love business so much. You don't have to agree with them; part of the fun of reading this book is that it makes you think. They synthesize a lot of concepts to arrive at what they think makes Americans work. Just like citizens everywhere, Americans are entitled to their own versions of ideas imported from other countries, such as the quality movement. These get mixed in with ideas that seem uniquely American, such as being obsessed with big and more. This book shows where such ideas came from and how Americans make them our own.
