Review by Michael Pellecchia
The Internet Report compiled by Mary Meeker and Chris DePuy for Morgan Stanley. Caught up in the cyber-excitement of it all yet? With Internet-related IPOs coming on the market left and right, more mergers on the horizon, new startups proffering their World Wide Web wares, and with some form of Internet-related phenomenon affecting almost every area of technology businesses, this book is a gold mine of information. I've seen many books about the Internet but this is the first one with detailed summaries of the companies betting on Internet infrastructure, software and services, and content and aggregation. That includes everyone from Internet-specific startups to telecom giants such as AT&T and MCI. The book is geared toward investors-the first page you see upon opening the cover is a "trail guide" directing you to various chapters according to your existing Net literacy. According to the trail guide, "mastering sections II, III and IV can make the reader sound smart at cocktail parties, knowing Sections I and V can impress your accountant, and dropping a few URLs from Chapter 12 during dinner with wow the kids." Sound easy enough? It is. This is kind of a whole earth guide to the whole techno-shebang.
