More for Moosewood

Review by Sybil Pratt

To many, "Moosewood" means innovative vegetarian cuisine. Now, the collective that runs the famed Moosewood restaurant and has produced seven popular cookbooks turns its talents to the gastronomy of the grand gathering, or as the title reads, Moosewood Restaurant Cooks for a Crowd: Recipes with a Vegetarian Emphasis for 24 or More.

Moosewood recipes always reflect concern with the regional, the seasonal, and the interestingly ethnic. The over 300 clear, easy-to-follow recipes and menu suggestions included here are no exception. There are soups, salads, sandwiches, sauces and salsas, stews and sautˇs, stuffed vegetables, desserts, and more. A Curried Sweet Pea Soup is velvety and the very color of budding leaves; Mu Shu Vegetables uses flour tortillas to wrap crunchy sautˇed veggies and gingery tofu; and the slow-baked, brandy-spiked Cayuga Mud Cake is a chocolatey way to please everyone in the crowd.

Sybil Pratt is an avid cook.
