South Florida swelters in the summertime, but that doesn't mean that crime reporter Britt Montero has time to cool her heels. In Act of Betrayal , Edna Buchanan's fourth Miami-based mystery, Britt reopens a case of a missing teenage boy and discovers a frightening pattern of disappearing boys over the past few years-all slender, all blondes of 13 and 14, all gone without a trace. In the midst of this, she finds herself on a personal quest for her Cuban father's prison diary, written before he was shot by a Castro firing squad. It's hard to imagine how these plots intertwine, but leave that to Buchanan's mastery and hold on to your earphones as the pace picks up enough speed to match the oncoming megastorm.
