If your tastes run to darker tales, try the very noir first novel Suspicious River, by poet Laura Kasischke, which chillingly depicts the life of Leila, a young, married, small-town prostitute. Present and past are skillfully interwoven as the narrative flashes back to a terrible and damaging childhood and then repeatedly comes back to the drab motel rooms where Leila services men. This technique draws a parallel between childhood abuse and adult masochism. The gritty realism of the novel keeps you reading, even past the point of comfort or hope.
