Written soon after the explosion, each of the adult statements is brief and specific, but clear in reference. From the Fire Department's first dispatch at 9:02 a.m. to a Red Cross volunteer's description of mourning families at the Family Memorial Service, this book almost dares us not to feel the shock and horror that spread in the bomb's wake of 169 lives lost, 19 of them young children.
Letters and pictures sent to Oklahoma City from children across the nation form the bulk of the book. Starting immediately after the explosion, thousands of cards, letters, posters, banners, and hundreds of teddy bears flooded into Oklahoma. Children wrote of fear and sadness; they vented their outrage; they praised the rescue workers; and they wrote to the families who lost loved ones.
But this children's book is sharp testimony to hope and healing. In fact, hope may be the most often used word in the book. One child hoped "they capture the terrorist soon"; another wrote Governor Keating that he hoped "your tears will go away soon"; another urged families in Oklahoma to "Keep up hope. I do."
Dear Oklahoma City, Get Well Soon helps readers find cause for hope in the writings of children.
