Ruth Rendell makes a very welcome audio encore this month, too, writing under the pseudonym of Barbara Vine. The Brimstone Wedding is a haunting, mesmerizing tale of a long love affair with a deadly twist, long in the past but remembered in powerful, passionate detail. Stella seems the consummate "lady," delicate, dignified, removed from anything harsh or vulgar. Now 72 and dying, Stella confides her story to the young woman who cares for her, and who, though from a totally different background, understands how love can destroy reason. Vine's characters are wonderfully drawn and richly realized here in Laurel Merlington's fine performance.
