Review by Sukey Howard
The aristocratic Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley and his anything-but-aristocratic sidekick, Sergeant Havers, are back on the scene in Elizabeth George's most recent mystery, Payment in Blood , And what a complicated scene it is. A group of London's theatrical elite come to a remote estate in Scotland to read through a new play. A major row puts an abrupt end to the reading, and later that night someone puts an abrupt end to the playwright's life. Lynley is sent up from Scotland Yard to investigate and finds that Lady Helen, the woman he loves, is there, too-with the director, a man who is high on the list of possible killers. But, there are other suspects with seamy pasts to explore and motives galore. George is in top tale-telling form, and Derek Jacobi, who reads, is superb, as always.
