In a snowy garden

Review by Pat Regel

The final book is a little gem, something for you to read now, in the winter, when your thoughts of the past gardening season dwell on what you should have done and look forward to what you will do. Keep The Unsung Season with you as company on snowy days, and let the inspiring prose of Sydney Eddison and color photos of Karen Bussolini cheer you. This book sheds new light on a neglected season.

The Unsung Season celebrates gardens and gardeners who make the most of winter, for as Eddison says, "Garden pleasures don't stop when the leaves fall." Some of the 20 gardeners Eddison interviews had the foresight to design their gardens to look beautiful when viewed through windows during snowy winter days. Others have found ways to bring their gardens indoors: using windowsills, spare bedrooms, and enclosing porches to make greenhouses. Some turn their creativity to crafts, dying, spinning, or cooking with herbs gathered and dried during the summer. But, Eddison's book should be taken in sips, not gulps. And, parts of it should be left to digest over time. You may even find yourself contemplating a new way to spend "the season of no sun."
