Beyond the basic skills

Review by Pat Regel

If you have the rudiments of gardening down and are ready to move on to a higher level, Ann Lovejoy's book is the one you'll need next. She's done a splendid job of taking the post-novice by the hand and walking further along the garden path in her book (what else but), Further Along the Garden Path.

Lovejoy has organized her book by month because "that's how garden work is done . . . chapters are grouped by month to guide you through the seasonal chores, garden planning and planting activities of the garden year." Her plant suggestions are recommended for Zones 4 to 6, and this reviewer is delighted to see this no-nonsense honesty (at last!) with regard to Zones. There are enough comprehensive books out there that give too much general information and succeed in disappointing gardeners who realize (only too late) that recommended plant choices were wrong for their Zone.

This book will be consulted on and off throughout the gardening year. The color photos will inspire, and the clear, down-to-earth advice will comfort.
