Sholem Aleichem's stories are a joy to read, but even more of a joy when read aloud, and who better to read than Theodore Bikel. Six of the eight famous Tevye stories are included in Tevye the Dairyman, the four that formed the basis for "Fiddler on the Roof" and two more, as charming as the others. Sholem Aleichem's tales capture the essence of a world that has disappeared, the world of the Eastern European Jews and the shtetls they lived in. There's humor, there's sorrow, and a special brand of philosophy--"what a shame it is we have mouths, because if we didn't we'd never go hungry"--but over all there's that enduring passion for life and infectious exuberance that's made Tevye, "a schlimazel with horse and a cart" who dreams of being a rich man, one of the most beloved characters in Jewish fiction.
