"Super-sleuth caught in a web of intrigue" may seem an odd description for Henry Adams, grandson of an American president, great-grandson of another, and a distinguished 19th-century historian. But in Eric Zencey's ingenious period thriller, Panama, Adams finds himself compelled by a compelling young woman to solve a murder that involves mistaken identities, big bucks, bribery and, ultimately, the Panama Canal scandal that threatened to overwhelm France. It's a fascinating detective story wrapped in historical detail while fully evoking the feel of Paris in 1892. Boyd Gaines is a fine narrator who conveys Adams's dignity, distress, and dogged determination to get to the truth. You'll be intrigued, entertained, and informed.
