Shall I Knit You a Hat? A Christmas Yarn
|
An ear-resistible Christmas tale
Sisters Kate and M. Sarah Klise, who pooled their efforts to produce Regarding the Fountain and three other popular books for middle-grade readers, have collaborated on their first picture book, and it's a charmer. Shall I Knit You a Hat? A Christmas Yarn is a quirky and delightful story about the power of gift-giving. Little did Mother Rabbit realize what would happen when she generously knitted a special ear-hugging hat for her beloved child, Little Rabbit. When the happy and warm bunny suggests that he and his mother knit hats for all their friends, she exclaims, "That idea is so delicious, it deserves a second piece of carrot cake." It's a good thing they have sustenance, because there is a lot of work ahead of them. First, they sneakily measure their friends' hat requirements, from horse to pig to cat to dog. Then they design the hats and set their needles to clicking. When the lucky recipients first open their new Christmas presents, their eyes, painted in flat acrylics with droll understatement, show their confusion about the oddly shaped hats. But, when snow begins to fall, the newly hatted friends suddenly appreciate the loving intentions of the rabbits. The Klise sisters have created a sweet story that will surely inspire legions of knitters to pick up their needles and plunge into generous projects of their own.
