Second chance for love

REVIEWS BY SANDY HUSEBY

When he proposed, she ran away in a panic. Ten years later, the high school sweethearts come face-to-face again in Beth Kendrick's side-splitting, tear-streaked ode to teen love rekindled, My Favorite Mistake. Faith Geary has been on the run ever since leaving Lindbrook, Minnesota, to become a globetrotting travel writer. Her sister Skye's desperate phone call drags her back to deal with a failing small-town Minnesota bar, The Roof Rat, Skye's broken marriage, and a business partner Faith doesn't want to acknowledge—Patrick Flynn, the guy she left behind. She's returned intent on rescuing her sister, but Faith discovers she's the one with plenty to learn about love and commitment, relationships and romance. The lessons come in a plethora of packages, from a winsome eight-year-old who has dubbed himself Rex to the oh-too-appealing Flynn. Stir in the Geary sisters' high school nemesis Sally Hutchins for a dueling-divas-in-the-street scene to die for. This is a laugh-out-loud treat as frothy and appealing as raspberry sorbet. Kate Hudson, option this one—quick!

Sultry Southern secrets

Before going back to his own home, Luke Boudreau must make a journey to honor the memory of the man whose death he caused in Susan Crandall's emotionally charged Magnolia Sky. Luke's plan to tell Calvin Abbott's family how Calvin sacrificed his own life to save Luke's during a Special Forces operation seems simple enough. But when Luke comes to Magnolia Mile, the Abbots' home and landscaping business, he finds a ready-made family he covets for his own. Analise, Calvin's widow, carries her own burden of responsibility for his untimely death and craves the security of Calvin's family. Younger brother Cole wants to live up to the image of his heroic brother but rebels when Ana needs him the most. The truth that Luke brings plays out against the sultry Southern backdrop of family secrets and sorrows and one man's determination that only he can have Ana. An engrossing story that affirms the best of what families are made, not born, to be.

In cold, bloody intent

Flawed lives, forever marked by the actions of one man, play out in the twisted, criminal trio of Melanie Sparks, her son, Charlie, and her brother, Jared Barnett. Grace Wenninghoff is the county prosecutor who realizes Jared Barnett is shadowing and taunting her in Alex Kava's tautly spun suspense novel, One False Move. Grace tries to stay ahead of Barnett and get him safely locked up behind bars again, before he can add her—or her daughter Emily—to his growing list of victims. Andrew Kane is drawn into the danger when his plan for a quiet writing retreat to the Platte River State Park is invaded by the criminal trio in the aftermath of a failed bank robbery. Melanie is torn between fearful loyalty to her brother and horror at the carnage he's drawn her and Charlie into. Kava's eye for the details of criminal investigation and the corrupting darkness of the criminal mind makes for a chilling, compelling read.

Game, set, match (making)

When a mysterious advice columnist who's a hit with his female readership turns out to be a tall, gorgeous example of eye candy, what's a hard-driving publicist to do but make him the centerpiece of a fledgling magazine, Glass Slipper, about life makeovers for women? Except, columnist Eric has one teeny-tiny little flaw—the man's man who lets women in on all guys' secrets happens to be gay. So publicist Valerie Wagner and erstwhile columnist Eric concoct a scheme to use his best childhood friend Jack as a photo double. Donna Kauffman's fairy-tale romp, Dear Prince Charming, is as fast-moving and zingy as the world-class pingpong matches down-on-his-luck sportswriter Jack Lambert used to cover. With Eric and Valerie doing the persuading, Jack abandons his protestations and goes along with the game. Everyone's a winner, especially readers!
