November BookPage interviews:
Amy Tan: Bouncing back from a fateful illness
Amy Tan had fervidly hoped to publish her fifth novel this fall, but fate would not
allow it. Tan, who exploded onto the world literary stage with The Joy Luck Club in 1989, had just returned
from a four-month worldwide tour in June 2001 promoting her fourth best-selling novel, The Bonesetter's Daughter,
when she knew something was very, very wrong...
Peter Carey: The Booker Prize winner investigates the seduction of the scam
You would think that a novelist who has twice won the prestigious Booker Prize
would be set for life. But such are the vagaries of literary fortune that Peter Carey found himself driving over the
George Washington Bridge some time ago telling his wife that they faced a situation in which they had half as much money
coming in as they had expected. Fortunately Carey's latest venture turns out to be his riskiest and most pleasurable bit of
storytelling to date (and seems a reasonable candidate for a third Prize, given the breathtaking accomplishment of it,
titled My Life as a Fake.)
