Like father, like daughter

REVIEWS BY SANDY HUSEBY

Inheriting a $3 million Beacon Hill townhouse from the father she never knew unleashes a maelstrom of questions and emotions for Casey Ellis in Barbara Delinsky's evocative new novel, Flirting With Pete. Just when she thinks she's most alone—her business group breaks up, her mother has been comatose for three years—Casey discovers a wealth of new chances in the townhouse. But a lifetime of following her father's path, even choosing a career as a consulting psychologist, only reinforces the self-doubts that have tormented her all her life. The discovery of journal writings by a mysterious and troubled young woman named Jenny complicates the tangled issues brought to a head by the unexpected inheritance. As Casey digs into her father's life and her own history, Jordan the gardener challenges her preconceptions. Is he a temptation that will lead her astray or Adam to her Eve in this now-cherished sanctuary? To fulfill her own destiny, Casey must open herself up the way her father never did. Barbara Delinsky is a premier storyteller who finds the dramatic and profound amid everyday lives. In Flirting With Pete, she delivers a powerfully moving story of relationships and redemption.

Dark side of the moon

While at work in her field of genetics, Dr. Megan Sheridan discovers a provocative new area of research that leads her down dark paths in Rebecca York's shivery romantic suspense novel, Killing Moon. Ross Marshall is a private investigator with unique talent and qualities that make him an invaluable resource for Det. Jack Thornton. But those same qualities threaten Ross' very survival. Megan treats his wounds, then learns the transforming scope of his unusual heritage, but that knowledge and Ross' dogged pursuit of serial killer Donald Arnott threaten her own life. The doctor and the lone wolf are drawn together as lifemates, yet as hunter becomes hunted, forces eager to destroy them may make that life all too short. Killing Moon will captivate readers with mesmerizing action and passions that leap from the pages with the power of a wolf's coiled spring.

Wolf in sheepish clothing

Played strictly for laughs, Donna Kaufman's Big Bad Wolf Tells All is a romping sexy tale of advice (both giving and ignoring it) and consent of the heart. Tanzy Harrington tells all in her online singles column. And she's got plenty to tell—not least the angst of being The Last Bridesmaid in a group of now-married friends who feel obliged to draw her into their ranks. When her Aunt Millicent orchestrates an up-close-and-personal encounter with Riley Parrish, she rebuffs any niggling inner attraction to the all-too-obviously Clark Kent in ill-fitting clothing. And yet. It's the "and yet" that makes for the delicious two-step Tanzy and Riley dance around each other while he tries to protect her from a predatory online stalker-fan, and she tries to remember why the swingin' single life is her modus operandi. This is one sheepish tale that stands out from the flock of chick-lit patter with a unique zest and fire all its own.

Liar, liar . . . on fire

Desperation drives Agatha Cunnington to lengths she never dreamed of in her rural girlhood in Celeste Bradley's appealing historical novel, The Pretender. Her own pretending pales compared to the sophisticated realm of intrigues and invention among the renegades who dub themselves the Liar's Club. Whether he is scoundrel or saint, enticing spymaster Simon Montague Rain is the man Agatha must trust with the safety of herself and her brother James. It's a dewy-fresh tale laced with simmering desires as turbulent and enervating as thunder on the horizon. Tuck this treat in your beach bag just in case the clouds come out.
