What Should I Do With My Life?

Winner marches to the beat of a different drummer
It's an age-old question: What is my calling in life? Writer Po Bronson asks the question in his best-selling book, What Should I Do with My Life?, and shows how dozens of people have followed unique paths to fulfillment. In a recent contest sponsored by Simon & Schuster Audio, we invited BookPage readers to offer their own answers to life's ultimate questionin 100 words or less. Readers from across the country responded by telling us about their experiences as teachers, nurses, writers and volunteers. They expressed their intention to serve others, save the planet, become better parents and be thankful for what life has given them. But we especially liked the entry of our grand prize winner, Bill Landau of Flagstaff, Arizona. Landau will receive a CD player and a collection of best-selling audiobooks from Simon & Schuster Audio, including What Should I Do with My Life? in an audio version read by the author. In deciding what to do with his own life, Landau chose an unexpected path:
Henry David Thoreau said, "It is not enough if you are busy. The question is, what are you busy about?" At age 44, I took that quote to heart, sold my successful photography studio and realized a lifetime dream by taking a job at a public library. I said goodbye to my $70,000 annual salary and am experiencing the most rewarding work of my life as a librarian and storyteller. Now instead of just being busy making a dollar, I have found great joy in being busy at making the world a better place, one bookand one patronat a time.
