The heroes and horror of 9/11

According to some estimates, almost 200 books are being published to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Sept. 11. Each book pays tribute to those lost on 9/11, but we were especially touched by the heroism and heartache in the eyewitness accounts and moving photography found in these five books.

CBS News collected stories and photos from the hours and days after the attack into a unique record that includes a full-length CD narrated by Dan Rather and hundreds of black-and-white photos.



Jere Longman tells the unforgettable story of the passengers and crew of Flight 93, who bravely fought to take back their plane. Based on hundreds of interviews, this account describes the remarkable group on board that included security guards and soldiers, military pilots and government officials.



A collection of 278 moving photographs that document the attack, its aftermath and the recovery by NYPD detective David Fitzpatrick, the only person granted unrestricted clearance to photograph the World Trade Center site from the air.



People from all walks of life—rescue workers, high school students, firefighters, priests and business people—share eyewitness accounts of Sept. 11 and the quirks of fate that saved their lives.



A first-person account of Sept. 11 from FDNY Battalion Chief Richard Picciotto, the last fireman to escape the devastation after being buried alive for more than four hours in the rubble of the North Tower.
