Just Jack: straight talk from the top
Jack: Straight from the Gut by Jack Welch with John A. Byrne is the engaging and candid biography by the former CEO of General Electric. While many job-hopped, Welch spent his entire career with GE, starting in 1960 as an engineer earning $10,500 and becoming CEO in 1981. Despite a marked distaste for bureaucracy and cronyism, Welch found a niche within one of America's largest companies. Later he transformed GE into an idea-driven company where innovation was resoundingly rewarded.
A straight-shooter, Welch accepts responsibility for his mistakes as readily as he claims credit for his triumphs. "I was just full of myself," he declares repeatedly, acknowledging that some of GE's worst financial choices were programs he pushed because he "it was a classic case of hubris." He's also not afraid to talk about his divorce but praises his former wife, is a loud and proud dad who crows about his kids' accomplishments and is quick to name co-workers who helped GE and his career along the way. Jack is a book about the making of a true leader, but it's also the revealing and honest story of a man who knows himself and his business well.
