Mr. Commitment

REVIEW BY STEPHANIE SWILLEY
British author Mike Gayle gives us a sharp, funny peak inside the male mind, with all its fears and phobias about love and marriage laid out, in the hilarious new novel, Mr. Commitment. Facing inevitable comparisons to that other quirky British import Bridget Jones and providing plenty of laughs along the way, Gayle delivers the perfect contemporary take on modern romance. A 20-something, aspiring stand-up comic, Duffy has so far managed to skirt the ultimate intimacy issue with his girlfriend, Mel. But for her, four years is long enough. Taking matters into her own hands, she interrupts Duffy's beloved Star Trek, gets down on one knee and proposes to him. The ultimatum is clear -- it's now or never. But Mel's long anticipated engagement is short-lived after a harrowing trip to IKEA dashes her hopes of marital bliss. Fed up with his marriage-waffling antics, she shows Duffy the door. The action and comedy heat up with Duffy's resolution to become "a superstud of seduction, a he-who-will-never-again-come-off-worse-with-the-chicks, a righteous dude committed to anything but commitment." Despite being pursued by a gorgeous babe nicknamed "TV's Hottest Totty," Duffy is consumed with jealousy when he sees Mel out with another fellow. It's a wonderful role reversal for a guy not yet ready to admit that his wild, single days are over. Duffy and Mel's on-again, off-again relationship rings true and Gayle works magic with the ordinary, everyday events of being a couple. Gayle's best-selling British novel, My Legendary Girlfriend, made him a hit overseas. With his first U.S. release, he delivers another tale of romantic woe that reminds us why the marriage of romance and comedy is such a classic combination.
