MEET THE AUTHOR: Catherine Ryan Hyde
Title of your new book:
Electric God
Describe your book in 50 words or less:
Hayden Reese's uncontrolled passion and anger strip him of everything worth having -- his home, his family, very nearly his life. His courage enables him to travel all the way through the roots of his rage to earn these things back. He teaches himself peace and forgiveness from the inside out.
What's your favorite thing about this book?
That it's a literary work. Pay it Forward is more popular and commercial, and that's great, but anybody who's read Funerals for Horses knows I'm primarily a literary author.
What one person would you like to read your book?
Bill Clinton. Maybe he'd go on to read the portrayal of himself in Pay It Forward, which I think he'd like. Actually, I drop his name in Electric God, too.
What's your favorite book? Favorite movie?
Book -- Of Mice and Men. Movie -- is it cheating to say Pay It Forward? I don't care. I'll cheat. I saw the rough cut and I love it.
Your novel, Pay It Forward, enjoyed wide acclaim and is being released as a movie. Have you used the concept of "paying it forward" in your own life?
Over the past 20 years, more times than I can count. Both before and after the release of the book. Whether the people I helped really paid it forward, I don't know. But then, you never do. You have to act in areas of faith.
What one thing would you like to learn to do?
Yoga. I'm working hard at it right now. A quiet mind would be a blessing.
What's your most aggravating habit?
I have a hard time staying in the present. Especially now, when the near future is so exciting. My head is always two months down the road.
Are you working on another novel? If so, what is the subject?
I'm revising my novel Walter's Purple Heart, which will come out next year. It's about a slain WWII soldier who reincarnates to find his loved ones.
Electric God is the third novel by
Catherine Ryan Hyde, whose second book, Pay It Forward, has been adapted as a
feature film starring Helen Hunt, Kevin Spacey, and Haley Joel Osment. She lives
in California.
