MEET THE AUTHOR:
NICHOLAS SPARKS
Title of your new book:
The Rescue
Describe your book in 50 words or less:
Whenever I write a novel, my primary goal is always the same: To write a story that's both interesting and original, one where the pages almost seem to turn themselves. Like my other novels, "The Rescue" is a love story and to my mind, it's the best novel I've written to date.
Are any of the characters in this book patterned after real people in your life?
Yes -- two characters -- Kyle Holton and his mother Denise -- are patterned after my own life. Kyle is drawn from my son and Denise is sort of a combination between my wife and I.
What's your favorite thing about this book?
There's a lot of action in the novel, scenes unlike those found in my other novels.
Your first novel spent more than a year on the bestseller lists and sold more than two million copies. How did this success change your life?
It made me realize how difficult it is to write a second novel when expectations are high.
You're a voracious reader as well as a writer. Any recent favorites among the books you've read?
I particularly enjoyed "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield.
How do you spend your time when you're not writing?
I exercise, read or spend time with the family. My life is actually fairly simple.
What one thing would you like to learn to do?
I would like to learn to play the piano.
"The Rescue" is the fourth novel by Nicholas Sparks, whose previous bestsellers include "The Notebook", "Message in a Bottle", and "A Walk to Remember." He lives in North Carolina with his wife and three children.
